Situated in the Free Port area of Hamburg between the Deichtorhallen and Baumwall, this landmark of red bricks in typical northern German style is the world's oldest warehouse centre. The little towers and gabled roofs are best seen on a harbour tour, revealing their reflection in the bordering canals. These days, the historic Speicherstadt amazingly still serves its original use, storing a huge range of different goods in the massive warehouses, some of which are up to eight storeys high.

This prominent feature on Hamburg's skyline is located just north of Planten un Blomen. With a height of over 270 metres / 886 feet, the Heinrich Hertz TV Tower is an eye-catching local landmark and offers superb views of the city, stretching as far as Lower Saxony. The stylish, revolving restaurant at the top is ideal for a rest before taking the quick way down with a bungee jump from a short board, which juts out from the tower itself. Locally, the tower also goes by the nickname 'Telemichel'.

The Hamburg Justizforum is where the city's justice is meted out, and the grandeur of the elaborate buildings reflect the confidence and liberty of the city. In the centre is the High Court, featuring imposing architecture in classical Greek style. The Assembly of the Civil Court is to the left, boasting renaissance features, while the Criminal Punishment Building was the first structure on the site, with sandstone decorations highlighting its exterior. While touring the area, don't overlook the lovely statues in the square's centre.

Located right in the heart of the red-light district, this Catholic church was built in the early 18th century over five years. The name of the street on which it sits refers to the ancient law of religious freedom. The church's entrance is adorned with images of Jesus and Joseph and its face is characterised by sandstone decorations in Baroque style. Hamburg's St. Joseph Church sustained serious damage in WWII, but was reconstructed to become Hamburg's most impressive Baroque church. These days, it is mainly Polish immigrants who attend the church services.

Hamburg Landmarks and Monuments: Trostbrücke - Old Town, Hamburg, D-20457, Germany, DE
This little stone bridge may be small in size, but is huge in historical significance. Straddling the Nikolaifleet canal, it was erected in the latter part of the 19th century. The Trostbrücke Bridge takes its name from the world 'comfort', as many Hamburg locals believe that criminals on their way to appear before the city's magistrate were given solace by the bridge, before learning of their fate.
